Predict & Win
Gamifying the Match-Watching Experience During Indian Premier League 2023
01. Overview
With a base of 90M+ monthly users, Sportskeeda is a global leader in sports media. During the IPL, millions of fans visit to follow live scores and match updates.
However, we noticed a critical pattern: Most users check the score and leave quickly. This revealed an opportunity to transform a passive utility page into an interactive hub.
The result was Predict & Win — a gamified experience that turned passive viewers into active participants.
02. The Problem & Opportunity
Passive Watching vs. Active Interaction
How might we increase engagement during live matches without disrupting the core match-watching experience?
Research (Deloitte 2023): Fans today are no longer passive. 77% of fans multitask while watching games—checking stats and making predictions on second screens.
Predict & Win bridges the gap between casual "dinner table talk" and a rewarding digital product.

06. Learnings
Iteration is Product Strategy
The Coin Pivot: Users initially thought coins were real money. Future versions might use 'Points' or 'Runs' to better align with the cricket theme.
Window decisions: Extending the prediction window by 30 mins after match start led to a 15% increase in participation.
Tie-Breakers: With millions playing, submission timing became the key metric to decide ranking fairly.
